Once the mayor of the entire city of Atlanta, Sam Massell is now focusing on one booming section of the city. As president of the Buckhead Coalition, he is charged with helping to guide the development of this southern sub-city that the coalition describes as a “bustling business center . . . [with] serene and stable neighborhoods.” 

The partnership between Western Builders of Amarillo and Sears Methodist Retirement Systems Inc. epitomizes the benefits contractors and project owners enjoy when they maintain long-term relationships. The pair, which have worked together on retirement communities throughout Texas for more than 10 years, came together to enhance the end-result of the Meadow Lake Retirement Community in Tyler, Texas. 

Beginning in 2003, residents of Eagan, Minn., fought against a local developer’s plan to build approximately 480 homes on 121 acres, with 30 acres of open space, on the former site of a golf course. This disagreement continued until 2010, when city officials settled out of court and allowed the construction of a variety of homes on the space. 

According to Joe Hall Roofing President Brett Hall, success in the roofing business has a lot to do with being in the right place at the right time – even if no one else would consider it to be that way. “What makes smaller companies into bigger companies is hailstorms, and massive hailstorms,” Hall says. 

With its newest development located on the north property line of Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., Epoch Properties Inc. is working to ensure the theme park’s employees and other community members see the value in Landmark at Universal. The property is in an area with A+ rated schools, is close to transportation and is within walking distance of many entertainment options, but that is just a start of what it has to offer. Epoch Properties is working to ensure Landmark at Universal reflects the quality, service and commitment to detail that the developer has become known for. 

With a development firm as its sister company, Ambling Con­st­ruction Co. has the right ex­per­ience to serve other developers, Senior Vice President Gary Davila says. “We understand developers’ needs and their financial stresses,” he says. “We adapt our sched­ules and our billings to make them successful.”

Kohala Creative Construction LLC strives to be a one-stop shop for its clients, CEO Michael Bonahan says. “We’re able to provide finished products from concept to completion,” he states. Based in Kamuela, Hawaii, the general contractor specializes in residential development and construction, as well as small commercial projects. “Ninety percent of our business [occurs] on the Big Island,” Bonahan says.

Most companies have a corporate culture, but at Gavigan Homes, employees have esprit de corps – as in the U.S. Marine Corps. “Most of our employees actually feel like they joined the Marines by working with the company – my wife was a drill instructor,” jokes CEO Billy Gavigan. “We run it like a military sort of a group and organization.
