The first stop for many investors looking to build properties in the Dominican Republic is the offices of Sunshine-Invest Real Estate and Construction Co. and Planificarq Architects. While each company operates independently, the two regularly work together closely, as Planificarq serves as the chief architect on the majority of projects built and listed by Sunshine-Invest, says Bodo Hellberg, president of Sunshine-Invest. Eris Espinal, the director of Planificarq, used to be Sunshine-Invest’s in-house designer before establishing his own company. “We have a very good relationship,” Hellberg says.

Local Cayman Islands contractor Hurlstone Ltd. is celebrating 15 years of successful and ongoing construction business providing general contracting services for myriad clientele. From its inception in 1995, Hurlstone Ltd. has built projects such as office buildings, apartment complexes, hotels, commercial and industrial buildings, and single-family luxury homes up to $200 million (U.S.) for a large client base.

Green and sustainability have been the core focus of Chicago-based Casualty Recovery Group Inc. since it was founded in November 2008. “Even since its inception, that has been our goal,” Director and founding partner Tom Nesbitt stresses.

As Paradigm Window Solutions introduces new window products, the company strives to stay on “the leading edge of innovation,” General Manager Tom Keef says. “We’re typically the guys who come out with cutting-edge things first.” Based in Portland, Maine, the company specializes in high-end vinyl windows for commercial and residential buildings. Keef notes that after 20 years of fabricating windows for a national brand, operations as Paradigm began 10 years ago.

In 2000, Northern California’s Draeger Construction hired Brion Bovee to open the company’s Las Vegas office. “I started the company with nothing here,” he recalls. However, after about five years, “we got to the high point of 185 employees.” Draeger Construction is a remodeling company that provides services for the residential and commercial markets. Its services include reconstruction, roofing, painting, maintenance, interiors, HVAC and insurance repairs. It mainly works in Nevada, but has licenses to work in 14 other states.

What could be wrong with building luxurious condominium structures in one of world’s most coveted Caribbean locations? Well, not much, admits David Wilson, project manager at Butler Development Group, Grand Cayman’s premier builder of luxury resort condominiums. 

In January, Loveland, Colo.-based Alliance Construction Solutions officially became an employee-owned firm when former owner Clayton Schwerin retired and President Bill Joyner, Executive Vice President Brian Weinmaster and 12 other employees bought interest in the company. “Previously, there had been a small percentage of employee ownership, but now more than half of our work force has an ownership stake,” Joyner says.

Enhancing staff development programs and educating its partners on sustainable building practices are major focus points for C.F. Evans Construction as it gears up for recovery in the national housing market. The Orangeburg, S.C.-based firm has built more than 5,000 residential units throughout the southeast United States in recent years including multifamily, senior living and student housing projects.
