According to Joe Hall Roofing President Brett Hall, success in the roofing business has a lot to do with being in the right place at the right time – even if no one else would consider it to be that way. “What makes smaller companies into bigger companies is hailstorms, and massive hailstorms,” Hall says. 

In that respect, Joe Hall Roofing is fortunate to be based in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, the nation’s second-best market for storm damage, behind only Oklahoma. However, there’s a lot more to the company’s formula for success than simply being there, and these are the reasons why the company has progressed from being a smaller company to a bigger company to one of the best in the country. 

The company was founded by Hall’s father, who has been involved in the roofing industry since 1979. According to Hall, his father started the company in 1989 after acquiring the labor side of the roofing supply company he was working for. Today, Joe Hall Roofing is one of the top roofing contractors in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, a market that Hall estimates is crowded with more than 3,000 contractors who either specialize in or offer roofing services. He says the company is one of only a few top-rated roofing contractors on independent evaluation website Angie’s List. 

Youth and Experience

Joe Hall Roofing has risen to this position for a number of reasons, Hall says. Interestingly enough, the company has found a balance between experience and youth that has served it well so far. 

The experience comes from the large number of tenured employees within the company, including Hall’s father, who he says still puts in an average of 40 hours a week with the company. “He has never left the business, even though he’s retired,” Hall says. “To have a mentor inside of your office most days with that experience for growing a young staff, there’s no dollar value on that.”

At the same time, an influx of young talent has given Joe Hall Roofing an enthusiastic atmosphere its competitors don’t have. “We’re on a growth track for sure, and that track is driven by a young and dynamic staff of business professionals and college graduates typically not found in the construction business,” Hall says. “I feel like their knowledge and drive for success is what’s propelling the company.”

Along with the unique combination of youth and experience within the company, Joe Hall Roofing also benefits from the company’s strong principles. 

“I would say our tenure has led to a reputation of transparency and honesty,” Hall says. 

One of the most important aspects of transparency and honesty is how the company approaches its debts. “We have always paid our bills early and taken discounts,” Hall says. “We’ve discounted every single bill that we’ve gotten.” He goes on to say that he estimates the company has saved more than $1 million simply through paying its bills early and getting discounts as a result. 

The firm’s honesty is a point of pride for Joe Hall Roofing, and is an offshoot of its concentration on customer satisfaction. “I’ve always said we’re all too dumb to lie because we’re not smart enough to remember what the lie was,” Hall jokes.

“Our focus is the customer – we don’t focus on things like insurance companies or other avenues to stay busy,” Hall adds. “We keep the focus on each individual customer with the theory that each happy customer will bring us three more roofing projects.”

Keeping Busy

All of these advantages have been necessary for Joe Hall Roofing to continue thriving in the harsh economic conditions of today. In particular, the collapse of the housing and real estate markets has driven the company to work much harder. As a company with a lot of overhead, Hall says Joe Hall Roofing has been focused on procuring jobs as its top priority. 

“Winning contracts right now is basically [our focus],” he says. “Being a large enough company, I can cut my numbers to get the work and let volume carry me through.” 

However, Hall says he expects spring to be a much better season in 2011 than it has been in the last couple years, and he is confident that the company’s strong work ethic will continue to be one of its main drivers moving forward. “We wake up earlier and work later,” he says.
