River City Construction has strived to provide high-quality results to its customers since it was formed in 1984. The company has built more than $3.75 billion worth of construction projects and grown to a workforce of more than 400 employees.

River City pursues a fair number of public work projects and has a good track record of successfully winning and being awarded these ‘hard bid’ jobs.  In addition, the company self-performs much of its own work on projects, including self-perform concrete, masonry, carpentry and architectural specialty packages.

In an effort to stay competitive and attract the best events in the convention market, San Francisco’s Moscone Convention Center – the city’s primary exhibition and meeting facility – is currently undergoing construction for a half-billion-dollar expansion.

“This is a huge project for the city of San Francisco because without this expansion, $200 million in economic activity will be lost every year,” says Thomas George, construction manager for Webcor Builders, the general contractor for the project. “We started construction fall 2014 and broke it into three phases because we couldn’t just close the convention center due to the high-volume amount of dollars it brings to the city.”

At a time when public projects are driven to find the lowest responsible bid, the impact of relationships can be understated. But the familiarity among owner, construction manager and contractors on the renovation and expansion of Michigan State University’s Breslin Student Events Center shows how critical trust can be in overhauling a facility that must remain open throughout construction.

All of the subcontractors chosen for the project are based in Michigan and many have worked on MSU projects before. “They understand the culture and expectation of the university so it’s not a matter of educating the contractors every time they come on site,” says Kevin Waldman, senior project manager for Barton Malow, the construction manager for the renovation.

A good affordable housing project can transform a community. It can bring in young professionals such as teachers and municipal workers who earn less than 80 percent of the local average mean income (AMI), while helping elderly residents afford to remain in their town.

Affordable housing projects can even revitalize a community. Fifteen years ago, Mountco Construction & Development Corp. was one of the few affordable housing developers in Mount Vernon, N.Y., a suburb of New York City near the Bronx. Mountco’s work in the area brought new people to the city, which in turned lured more shops and local businesses, sparking an economic renewal.
