After more than 100 years, Turner Construction Company has built up the experience and expertise necessary to excel at healthcare construction, Project Manager Bill Swanson says. “We understand our clients’ needs [when constructing] healthcare facilities,” he says.

The Laguna Honda Hospital Replacement project in San Francisco will give residents and staff an updated facility with state-of-the-art design and a substantially better quality of life. “We are glad to be a part of this remarkable project,” says Ron Wilcox, project manager for Turner Construction. “It will be the most advanced residential care facility in the United States, and the first LEED-certified hospital in the state of California, earning Silver status.”

Leave it to Orleans Parish, which includes New Orleans, to choose the building that includes the kitchen as the first in the Orleans Parish Correctional Complex to construct. But a sound reason to choose the building first is that it also includes much of the infrastructure for the complex.

Although most construction firms that have a bonding capacity of at least $30 million are large companies, Construct Two Group (CTG) is a smaller operation. “Our everyday competition are the top-20 firms in the U.S. because we have a bonding capacity of $30 million,” Chairman Derrick Wallace notes.

Throughout the Public Works Department (PWD) of Cattaraugus County, N.Y., employees share the goal of doing jobs right the first time, Deputy Commissioner Anthony Capito says. “[We are] very responsive to getting things accomplished,” he says. For example, when the PWD coped with a flood last August, its staff performed as needed. “Our employees, without question, just did what they had to do to keep our roads open and our departments functioning,” Capito recalls.

With 284 beds and 14 operating rooms on 10 floors – eight above grade and two below grade – the seven-year process to build the new San Francisco General Hospital is a complicated one. So general contractor Webcor Builders is maintaining close contact with the owner and architect, and is utilizing building information modeling to mitigate any problems with the help of the virtual world.

Akin to its name, Total-R Insulation Solutions strives to provide the best solutions for general contractors’ insulation needs, and as a result, has developed solid relationships within the construction industry, says John Trapp, founding partner. “We want to be the contractors’ first call for building envelope solutions,” he states. “We feel as if we are part of their staff, and it’s our responsibility to make sure their needs are taken care of.”

After more than 100 years, T.B. Penick & Sons Inc. has stayed strong by consistently performing “good, honest hard work,” Executive Vice President Greg Lee says. He notes that this has allowed the company to earn a great name for itself and create ongoing success.
