Military construction is the hero of the current recession, but RQ Construction volunteered for this work long before it became the only base in town. A recent example of the company’s expertise is that of the 35 contractors that vied to construct a military data center, only three were short-listed, and RQ was one of them.

Reich+Petch Design International prides itself on the ability to create large exhibit spaces with their end users in mind. “A lot of our projects deal primarily in the public realm in spaces and experiences,” says Tony Reich, a principal in the Toronto-based firm. “We really design for visitors to these exhibits, and that’s what makes us different.” The firm, which often works in conjunction and shares staff and principals with sister firm Reich+Petch Architects Inc., has created designs for public exhibits in museums, historical sites and other locations in 22 countries. 

How suite it is to have some privacy in your college residence hall. That is what colleges and universities are delivering today. “Today’s students have different needs and requirements when they’re looking at various colleges in regard to what type of living experience they expect,” points out Stephanie Schmidt, executive vice president of Poole Anderson Construction LLC. “They’re not looking for a room with two beds and a gang bathroom.”

M.D. Descant Inc. is keeping busy with several public school and healthcare sector projects. Vice President Chuck Descant runs the family-owned contracting company alongside his brother Don, the company’s president; Dwight, executive vice president; and Trent, vice president. Chuck Descant says the company’s hard work and low overhead, as well as its dedication to quality work and service and positive reputation in its market, have kept it going through difficult times. 

When International Piping Systems (IPS) Inc. takes on a project, it says it is often perceived as an extension of its clients’ employees. “We work hard to keep our pipe fitters and service technicians among the most highly trained in the industry, regularly training them on the latest in industry technology and safety,” the company says. Based in Schaumburg, Ill., IPS specializes in full-service mechanical contracting. President and CEO Bob Lempa and Financial and Administrative Officer Fred Oyer founded the company in 1979. According to IPS, both founders carry extensive industry experience.

At Ainsworth Inc., the name of the game is having the right people in place to serve its clients, Sales Man­ager Emile Saulnier says. “It’s a people business,” he declares. “[We have a] good, quality staff from the top to the bottom of the organization.” 

Whether it is a retrofit project or new construction, most owners want energy-efficient and “clean” HVAC systems in their buildings.  Comfort Systems USA, one of the largest HVAC contractors in the United States, can provide these systems. Comfort Systems USA, based in Houston, has locations throughout the United States, primarily in the Sun Belt and the Southeast.

Some construction firms might prefer to take on the easy jobs that have minimal complications, but Harris Cos. has found success by focusing on “large and technically complex projects,” President and CEO Greg Hosch says. Based in St. Paul, Minn., the firm is one of the largest mechanical contractors in its industry, with offices in four states and Canada.
