The reception station is the first place new recruits to the Armed Forces see after reporting to their base, and the place they receive their uniforms, haircuts and orientation to their new lives. New recruits at Fort Benning in Georgia are starting to see improvements to not only the reception station, but also the related barracks where they spend their first few weeks as soldiers before starting basic training.

Innovation Village is an area of the Boca Raton, Fla., campus of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) that is living up to its name in the construction of two new residence hall buildings. The $66 million project is being developed for FAU by a partnership of Balfour Beatty Campus Solutions and Capstone Development Group. It consists of two student housing buildings – one seven-story and one eight-story – that utilize several innovative construction techniques, among them prefabricated bathrooms, LEED status and completing 100 percent of a model unit before additional units were built.

The mostly privately funded University of Miami Life Science and Technology Park is being developed by Wexford Miami LLC, a subsidiary of Wexford Science and Technology LLC, in partnership with the University of Miami (UM). It is situated in Miami’s health district and adjacent to the University of Miami's Leonard M. Miller School of  Medicine.

Since its establishment seven years ago, MVE Institutional (MVEI) Inc. has carved out a niche designing student housing, educational, civic and public projects. The company’s base is now expanding to include large-scale housing and administrative projects in the military sector.

Founded in 1911, Keith Plumbing and Heating Co. Ltd. is on the verge of celebrating its centenary in 2011. “We believe we’re the oldest British Columbia-owned mechanical company,” owner and President Paul Myers asserts. “We also believe we are one of the largest commercial and institutional mechanical contractors in British Columbia,” he adds.

There are always plenty of challenges when building correctional facilities like the Mohave County Adult Detention Center in Kingman, Ariz. However, it takes an experienced contractor such as Faulkner USA to deliver a project situated in the side of a mountain. In September, Faulkner USA completed the 688-bed facility as the general contractor and design/builder for slightly more than $72 million. The facility occupies 266,000 square feet and consists of more than 800 precast con­crete panels that form walls and support beams.

Eggrock Inc. may manufacture bathrooms, but the main goal of the company is actually efficiency, President Jeff Barrett says. “What we’re all about is helping construction go a lot faster, with a much higher level of quality,” he says. “Bathrooms tend to be on a critical path of multi-dwelling construction projects.”
