On Nov. 1, Kaiser Permanente opened the doors to the brand-new Ontario Medical Center in Ontario, Calif., which not only brings additional jobs to the Inland Empire, but also raises the bar on how healthcare is delivered to its membership, according to Dan Gilbert, project director for Kaiser Permanente’s Ontario Medical Center project. The five-story, 386,000-square-foot hospital is based on Kaiser Permanente’s “template” design, which represents the latest generation of healthcare facilities built by the organization. “We developed the template model based on state-of-the-art healthcare concepts and evidence-based design,” Gilbert says.

Even a contractor with more than eight decades of experience in building projects throughout the United States – not to mention a top-10 ranking as an education builder from Engineering News-Record – can learn a thing or two from a complex project for a major university. In the case of JE Dunn Construction Co., Senior Project Manager Matt Meyer hopes his company continues to prequalify every trade, as it did for the exterior skin and mechanical, engineering and procurement subcontractors hired for the University of Colorado’s (CU) new biotechnology building in Boulder, Colo.

As the largest government building contractor in the United States as reported by Engineering News-Record, Hensel Phelps Construction Co. is a leader in the delivery of complex military projects throughout the country. In July, the Greeley, Colo.-based general contractor began construction on the $70 million Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort F35B Training Facility and Hangar project at the Beaufort, S.C., military base.

Since its inception in 1985, Gamma Construction – based in Houston with an additional office in Denver – has diversified its portfolio to include schools, offices, banks, restaurants, retail stores, auto dealerships and special-purpose buildings for oil companies. Through its relationships with large clients, the company has worked in nearly every U.S. state.

Symbiosis is the word Morris Aldridge, assistant superintendent of operations at the Clint Independent School District, would use to describe the district’s latest construction project. From the relationships formed among major team players, to the construction schedule developed by contractor CF Jordan, Aldridge describes the construction of the new Clint High School as a model project in terms of team cooperation.

Although it is the oldest public university in Texas, the reach of Texas A&M University has not spread to every corner of its state. But now, the university is growing with its Texas A&M-Central Texas campus project in Killeen, Texas. At the 2010 groundbreaking, System Board of Regents Chancellor Morris Foster said the campus would benefit many in the region. ”We really have the opportunity with this new university to educate people [who before] really haven’t been able to travel the distances needed,” he said.

There are not many firms that get the opportunity to qualify to work on prominent projects like the new World Trade Center. But, by having a strong project portfolio and the required bonding capacity, A&A Industrial Piping Inc. has qualified, according to General Manager William Albanese. The Fairfield, N.J.-based mechanical contractor specializes in HVAC installations and process and utility piping services. A longtime veteran of the industry, Albanese co-founded A&A Industrial 21 years ago.

When Dunlap Community Unit School District 323 in Dunlap, Ill., has needed to build or expand its schools over the past decade, it has looked to one construction manager to meet its needs. Dunlap’s newest school, Hickory Grove Elementary, is its fifth construction project since 2004 to be led by Mangieri Companies Inc. of Peoria, Ill.
