As part of a $30 billion-plus investment program to modernize, upgrade and expand Ontario’s public infrastructure, Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correction Services are replacing the Toronto Jail with the new Toronto South Detention Centre, a 1,650-bed maximum-security prison for adult inmates, including those with special needs.

It used to be that one would have to take a long trip outside of civilization for the chance to commune with nature and do some hunting. However, the Foxhall Resort & Sporting Club demonstrates that sometimes all it takes is a short drive. Located on 1,100 acres along the Chattahoochee River less than half an hour away from the metropolitan Atlanta area, Foxhall Resort has been described by the developers as “the nation’s first urban sporting club.”

When Anders Ragnarsson founded Continental Biomass Industries in 1988, he was looking to solve his own wood waste recycling needs. Today, the company has hundreds of machines operating worldwide and meeting the high-volume demands of the construction, forestry and other sectors.

Designed by world-famous architectural firm Dattner and Grimshaw, Via Verde is expected to serve as a model for affordable, sustainable housing in New York City. “The innovative design represents the future of high-quality, affordable and sustainable housing,” Via Verde LLC says.

The Union Pacific Railyards north of downtown Sacramento, Calif., is a historic landmark where settlers worked together to connect the West to the rest of the nation. Completed in 1869 as part of the Transcontinental Railroad, it was the centerpiece of the region’s economy and helped Sacramento transform itself into an industrial giant and vital transportation hub.

Like many others, Pratt and Associates LLC, also known as Pratt Home Builders, has gone through the extreme peaks and valleys that go along with being a U.S. homebuilder in the 21st century. “We’re the quintessential homebuilder story, where, when the market was really good in 2004 to 2006, we took on a lot of land and positions outside of our home base, and in 2007 started building houses in five different markets in the (southern United States),” President Win Pratt says. “We learned we weren’t ready to build in five markets, and when the recession hit in 2008 we had to liquidate and get rid of assets.

Barr & Barr is growing the Marshall Conant Science & Math Building at BSC. After more than 80 years, Barr & Barr Inc. says it has maintained a tradition of building excellence and hands-on management. The firm, which specializes in construction and program management, design/build services and sustainable building support, has operations in New England, New York and New Jersey.
