Balfour Beatty Communities

Members of the military have a plethora of needs when they are deployed, but housing is often their first priority when they return home. In fact, being transferred is a fact of life in the armed forces, and that’s where Balfour Beatty Communities comes in.

The residential property management company is a leading provider of military family housing in the United States. It provides more than 44,000 military homes for 150,000 residents living on 55 Army, Navy and Air Force installations across the country, the company says.

But Balfour Beatty sees itself as more than a property manager. Rather, the company takes significant pride in the work it does for military families, from providing new housing and significant renovations and refurbishments to existing properties to offering responsive property management and maintenance support.

More than Housing

Balfour Beatty’s services extend well beyond housing management to meet the various needs of military families. The company says its LifeWorks program, community centers, parks and other amenities help create thriving communities that fully support U.S. military members and their families.

Balfour Beatty describes the LifeWorks program as “an essential community experience you won’t find within traditional housing complexes.” Various free programs are held throughout the month that are designed to engage residents through events that are built around seven core areas: life management, physical, mind-building, social, community service, personal safety and environmental. The company lists the monthly events on each community’s website.

Those websites also are designed to simplify the process of a finding a new home. For example, the sites let families search for homes by neighborhood and then narrow the pursuit by other important factors such as number of bedrooms as well as military rank. Other details, such as a house’s proximity to the commissary, PX, community center, post office and hospital, also are highlighted on the websites. The sites also indicate which homes are ADA accessible.

Balfour Beatty says it strives to provide a community atmosphere while offering opportunities for residents of all ages to engage in a variety of social and learning activities.

Honoring the Military

Balfour Beatty believes in honoring military personnel. For example, the Balfour Beatty Communities Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to honoring active, disabled and fallen members of the armed forces.

Established in 2008, the foundation supports military service members and their families in a variety of ways. These include the establishment of communal gathering places for reflection on the contributions military families make, assisting returning service members who require specially adapted homes and providing scholarships and grants to the children of military families, the company says.

In addition, the foundation provides financial contributions to other nonprofit or service organizations focused on supporting service members, veterans and their families. Grants have been awarded to Luke’s Wings, the Fisher House at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Homes for Our Troops, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, Wounded Warriors Project and Operation First Response in support of wounded veterans as well as to Project H.O.M.E.

Over the years, Balfour Beatty has awarded dozens of scholarships to children of active military members who live in the  communities, helping them attend college or trade school. At Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, and Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo., the company has constructed “Fields of Honor” communal gathering and remembrance areas to honor the fallen soldiers from those installations.

An Ownership Investment

Since 2002, Balfour Beatty Construction and Balfour Beatty Communities have responded to the privatized housing needs of the U.S. military. The company takes an ownership interest in the creation of new communities at every phase of development.

The overall concept is to create neighborhoods with high-quality, well-maintained and safe housing in a supportive setting. The company strives to create exceptional communities that support America’s deserving military families.

During construction, the emphasis is always on quality, anchored by innovative construction methods and materials to support the environment. The company’s LEED professionals are committed to using sustainable practices by incorporating Energy Star products, environmentally friendly materials and ensuring the recycling and reuse of site materials, it says.
