Capform Inc.

Capform Inc.’s focus on its customers has led to repeat business. Full-service concrete contractor Capform Inc. is headquartered in Texas and has two satellite locations in Florida, a state that – like most others – is facing economic struggles.

Luckily for the company, the Texas’ market is still fairly robust, with ample government, healthcare and educational projects available.

“Two years ago, we had 2,000 employees – half in Florida,” Vice President Jim Renaud says. “But we’ve shifted a lot of our focus and shifted most of those people up here to Texas because Texas is still going strong. Texas is one of the few states that has work – its economy is strong, and it’s a place people want to be.”

Capform’s dedication to its 1,200 employees is reciprocated by a loyal staff, many of whom have been with the company for more than 20 years. “We treat people right,” Renaud states. “We pay competitive wages, challenge our employees with difficult projects, and give them the ability to bring their own knowledge and skills to a job as opposed to always dictating to them. They’re builders – you have to challenge them.”

Although the economy is struggling, Renaud says Capform employees are ramping up production to counter increased competition and decreasing market prices. “We’re demanding more production out of people, but so far, they’re stepping up to the plate and doing it,” he notes. “They’re just glad to have a job and figure that helping the company survive is better than hitting the streets and being unemployed. I credit a lot of it to the longevity of our staff, and we’re able to buckle down and get it done.”

Complete and Concrete

Capform’s turnkey offerings and focus on partnering with clients has led to a remarkable repeat client rate of roughly 98 percent, Renaud boasts.

“We have such a good reputation that most of our work is done with the same contractors over and over again, because they know they can count on us,” he says. “That way, when a general contractor is building this job, the next job or has a warranty issue, he’s talking to the same people over and over again. We’ve been doing it for a very long time, and we don’t take on new clients often.” The company can perform “a complete structure, from the ground up,” he says, adding that it always is focused on scheduling and efficiency. “We do it right the first time and always meet the schedule.”

Going for Quality

Capform builds and designs its own formwork systems and utilizes a 40-acre fabrication yard, machine shops and cranes to build them. It also boasts an in-house engineering staff to design its projects, which include stadiums, arenas, hospitals, garages, office buildings and condominium structures. Capform’s locations in Texas and Florida enable it to work throughout those states and across the Southeast. Its project costs range from about $500,000 to more than $40 million, ranking it consistently in the top-six concrete contractors in the nation, according to Engineering News-Record. While those rankings are noteworthy, Renaud says Capform has other priorities.

“We don’t go for size – we go for quality and customer service,” he states. “These things help us have all the work to keep our people busy, and that’s what we’re concerned with.”

Stickler for Safety

Although some companies may entice employees to maintain a focus on safety, Capform knows that the ultimate reward is safety itself. “The reward is doing your job efficiently and knowing you’ll go home to your family every night,” Renaud notes.

To ensure that happens, Capform has stringent training and monitoring systems to make sure employees abide by the rules, “and we don’t tolerate it if they don’t,” he adds. Last year, the company had an incident rate of 2.82 per 200,000 man hours, compared to the national average of 6.9. Its current emergency modification rate is 0.56, and its everyday goal is to decrease that number.

“All of our projects receive the attention of our safety department for pre-task planning, training and proper execution of all of our safety policies,” Capform notes. “High-rise work receives special attention to perimeter protection. Our ability to design and build our own forming systems allows us the opportunity to incorporate the perimeter protection into our forming system.”
