Pompano Masonry’s experience in a wide range of projects has earned it a leading position. Having a reputation for quality and the flexibility to adapt to changing market conditions enabled Pompano Masonry Corp. to evolve into one of the nation’s top masonry contractors. The Pom­pano Beach, Fla.-based company repeatedly lands on Engineering News-Record’s list of top-600 specialty contractors, which is a testament to its experience, craftsmanship and relationships with large contractors, the company says.

Pompano Masonry’s predecessor company, Anastasi Brothers, was established in Phila­delphia in the 1940s as a union contractor performing work across the Northeast. In the 1970s, the Anastasi family migrated to Florida and began performing construction in the South­east. A complete overhaul of its business model was required for the company to successfully com­pete. It ended its affiliation with the union and changed its name to Pompano Masonry Corp.

“The switch from union to nonunion was generated by our new location,” the company explains. “The Southeast is traditionally a non­union work force area, so in order for us to com­plete our projects on time, we had to go out and utilize the local work force for community participation in the projects. We found that there were a lot of non­union people available to us that allowed us to be more competitive because of the difference in wage scales and, with an abundance of nonunion workers in these areas, be able to man the projects properly in order to complete the projects on time and within our estimated labor budget. There’s a lot more flexibility in your work force if you are a nonunion contractor.”

Four years ago, the Anastasi family sold Pom­pano Masonry to CEO Julian Marie Breslow and President Stephen Siegel. Today, the company operates from its Pompano Beach headquarters, as well as from two satellite offices in North Caro­lina and Maryland. Its main markets are in Flor­ida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Mary­land, Virginia and Washington, D.C., but it has performed work in the Caribbean Islands, the company says.

Market Diversification

Pompano Masonry specializes in brick, stone and block, and performs private and public sector work in the commercial, institutional, in­d­us­trial and mixed-use residential markets. Its quality workmanship can be seen across the Southeast on a variety of project types ranging from prisons, hospitals and high-rises to schools, municipal auditoriums and sports arenas. “We enjoy a backlog of about $40 million spread throughout the three offices, which is quite an achievement in this particular market that we all face,” the company notes.

Having a diversified project scope enables Pompano Masonry to excel in a challenging economy because it can apply its skills to whatever mar­ket is succeeding at the time, it explains. “Diversification is paramount to being successful,” the company says. “If one market slows down, we still have the opportunity to do work in other areas of the market. For in­stance, the majority of work that we’re doing right now is military work and government work, particularly in Maryland and the Carolinas.”

As Pompano Masonry seeks to further expand its market reach, the company finds itself returning to its predecessor’s home state. “We’re in the process of negotiating work in Pennsylvania,” it says. “We are looking to expand into that particular market and continue to diversify.”

Quality and Safety

Having strong relationships with national general contractors also helps Pompano Masonry maintain its leading industry position. “We work with all the large contractors in the three areas that we are in,” the company says. “The reason why we’re called back to work for these contractors is because we bring the jobs in on time and we do a quality job. We never sacrifice quality for time. We make sure we have our jobs staffed properly with the proper equipment and a high emphasis on safety and quality.”

The company employs regional safety directors at each of its three locations. It places a high emphasis on safety and has incentives that encourage safe practices among employees. Toolbox meetings are a project must, and anyone entering Pompano Masonry work zone must wear eye protection, a hardhat and a safety vest. “We have a mod rate of .84, which is pretty substantial for a masonry contractor,” it says.
