Keeping Up With Technology

Today’s construction market is not the industry my father started his career in over 27 years ago. We have moved from an industry built on personal relationships and handshake deals to a fast-paced market revolving around high-speed emails and close encounters with prospective and existing clients who are ever demanding and increasingly short on interaction.

With this in mind, today’s residential construction leaders must adapt to a new reality that relies on technology for cost effectiveness and timeliness. After all, the rules of the game have not changed, but we do find ourselves challenged by the new mediums by which we must communicate and make our clients feel valued.

Why Technology

Twenty years ago you could still find my father with his notepad and stack of papers reminding him of appointments and measurements for upcoming meetings. Back then this was acceptable, but now, as business owners have increased the number of clients with job complexities rising, this is no longer sustainable. Developers have flocked to the construction industry offering hundreds of new solutions to help business owners.

From “To-Do Apps” and virtual assistants to high tech service software, we find ourselves pummeled by providers seeking to make our lives a lot easier. Not long ago it would have been crazy to think that you could conceive an idea and one month later someone would create it, but as new problems arise there are eager development firms looking to fill the niche.

For example, customers are increasingly being taken care of by service providers in other industries. We can now log on to personal client portals receive a plethora of account information and make requests with the click of a button. This service is attainable and now available to construction companies looking to offer a more streamlined personal service to their clients. This brings a whole new meaning to the term “connected.”

Inside these portals you may find the ability to not only communicate, but a central hub to house all project notes, plans, and calendar updates and production time lines. The portals do not just exist on the office computer, but are available via mobile apps that are constantly updating.

Trade Secrets

Along with portals and utility apps, technology has advanced to allow companies to perform bidding and estimate building from the comfort of the home, office, or field. Satellite analysis now takes measurements of the entire exterior of homes for perspective renovations and bids.

Utilizing these technologies not only save the cost of sending an employee to a prospective site, but you receive instant and accurate measurements from a satellite. This will translate into saving time, labor, and show to be much more efficient.

The Painful Truth

The reality is, the old way of doing things without technology is much more difficult than we like to admit. The real challenge is accepting that technology is helpful and necessary in our professional lives. Once you come to that reality, you have started a new journey that will not only increase your business wealth, but also your client’s happiness and satisfaction with the outcome of their project. Not only has your environment become more complicated, but so have your clients and their needs. There are many solutions out there, and not all of them are a right fit for everyone. Take your time and do your research, as picking the wrong solution may not only cost you a lot of money, but also a relationship with a customer.
