When Gerry and Hans Langejans took over Windmill Mechanical Services Inc., they broadened the sheet metal company to include mechanical contracting and maintenance, HVAC and plumbing services. Gerry, president, and Hans, vice president, inherited the family business in 1994.

After 68 years in the industry, Calgary-based CANA Group of Companies continues to grow. In April, it acquired Calgary-based High Time Industries Ltd., a company that specializes in engineering, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning and maintenance of high voltage electrical facilities. This new division will join CANA’s other companies – CANA Construction, ACE Construction and Shepard Development Corporation.

BMO Bank of Montreal announced Aug. 22 that it opened a $2.8 million branch in Calgary, its second branch in the city.

For Toronto, the waterfront along Lake Ontario is booming with development, as Waterfront Toronto, an agency of the federal, provincial and municipal governments transforms the former industrial edge of the lake and reconnects the city with the waterfront. George Brown College (GBC), also based in Toronto, will have the honor of being the first public institution to be located at the water’s edge.

Best Buy Canada and its acquired subsidiary Future Shop have had a busy 2011, according to Geoff Stollery, Best Buy Canada’s vice president of real estate development. By the end of this year, the company will launch 10 new stores. The Best Buy brand will open six new stores, and one relocation. Future Shop will expand its well-grounded Canadian presence with four new locations.
