B.J. McGlone & Co. Inc., celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, won for the second time in the past five years the Excellence in Construction Award from the Drywall and Interior Systems Contractors Association Inc. of New Jersey.

The award-winning project, Liberty Science Center, reopened its doors in October 2007 after a 22-month project schedule and a $109 million upgrade of its exhibitions, programs and theater experiences in facilities that have been enlarged and modernized with improvements such as new restaurants and retail amenities. The purpose of the redesign is to provide a unique and engaging resource about the science and technology that surround living, learning and working in the New Jersey/New York region.

B.J. McGlone’s $8 million contract included furnishing and installing metal framing, insulation, acoustical/metal/drywall ceilings, soffits, access doors, fire extinguisher cabinets, expansion joints, GRG column covers, light gauge framed mediated theater seating, shaftwall systems, doors, frames and hardware.

The Liberty Science Center four-story renovation and its 295,000-square-foot addition place this facility in an elite category, B.J. McGlone says.

Already established as a major destination and with a national-model approach for connecting with schools and families across all socio-economic circumstances, as well as for its adaptive use of videoconferencing technology, Liberty Science Center is poised to redefine how a science center can offer great public service.

The project was a resounding success in many ways, President Brian McGlone says, including finishing on time and within budget, notwithstanding the onset delays in the permitting process.

This flagship project demonstrates again B.J. McGlone’s ability to perform quality interior construction exceeding the expectations of its clients and end users.

B.J. McGlone was proud to be a subcontractor to and part of the Skanska USA Building, Inc. team in constructing this unique and challenging project.

Reaching for the Top
B.J. McGlone strives to be an indispensable part of its clients’ subcontractors’ list. “If our clients have a problem on a project, we want to be an integral part to providing a solution,” McGlone says. “From the beginning stages of the construction process, support and recommendations are offered to architects and designers on construction techniques, cost controls, and the selection of materials.

“We stress value-engineering, not only at the initial stages of our clients’ projects, but throughout the critical phases of the construction process.

“Our experienced and qualified estimating staff responds quickly to changes in schedule and design to keep projects on track.”

Continuously providing quality construction on budget and within schedule has often resulted in B.J. McGlone being the preferred interior system contractor. This approach, coupled with its core values, has earned the company many accolades throughout the industry, the company says.

In 1999 the firm was honored with The Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industries-International Excellence in Construction Award for its work at the Bernard Kilgore Center of Dow Jones & Co. in South Brunswick, New Jersey.

The four-story building features 300,000 square feet of office space, along with a museum, fitness center, and large rotunda for public events.

Because of the architectural design, including plans for perfect alignment and symmetrical balance throughout the four-story structure, coordination was critical.

Beginning on the first floor with the quarry tile floor layout, everything tied together with the utmost regard for tight tolerances.

Column enclosures met floor tile centers, windows fit perfectly between column bays, ceiling grid was aligned with columns, which in turn aligned with drywall fascias, soffits, reveals, window mullion centers, linear diffusers, sprinkler head and glass railings, McGlone says.

It all centered around three open skylight atriums.

Alignment was not only complicated by the length of the building, but also by the vertical alignment of the skylight, which was 60 feet to the low point and 72 feet to the high point.

Overcoming Challenges
The unforgiving tolerance and specifications were overcome by the in-depth experience of B.J. McGlone’s team of professionals, it says.

“The resources and special dimensions provided by B.J. McGlone serve our clients on a project from the early design to the delivery of the finished project,” the company says.

“Continuing efforts assure our clients’ goals are being met with the McGlone name standing behind its products.”

Experienced executives, qualified project managers, and responsible staff underscore that pledge to our clients, “Exceeding your expectations,” the company says.
