![]() Oil States’ primary business groups focus on offshore construction, marine pipelines and elastomers.
To ensure it meets the diverse needs of the oil and gas market, Oil States Industries Inc. has 13 business units spread among three primary market segment groups. Its business units offer services such as custom molding, mooring systems, subsea pipeline repair and marine riser systems. The company says the variety and depth of its services allow it to be customers’ “one source for diversified solutions.” Oil States Industries is a subsidiary of Oil States International Inc. with locations in countries around the world. The company notes it is a worldwide provider of products and services to the offshore oil and gas, onshore oil and gas, defense and general industries. Oil States’ three business groups – offshore construction, marine pipelines and elastomers – serve these industries. Oil States Industries’ parent company, Oil States International Inc., operates a diverse group of companies within the oil and gas sector whose activities range from onshore well workover operations through site accommodation services, pipe supply to the offshore products and services provided by Oil States Industries. The company explains its three divisions serve four market segments:
“We are a leading manufacturer of deepwater production products and subsea pipelines,” the company says. “We pride ourselves in our innovative solutions for industry demands.” “Oil States is a terrific company because we have great employees and products,” he says. “Employees joining Oil States bring with them valuable skills and experiences, which serve to further enrich our existing work force, and are necessary to continue successfully and competitively in today’s market. This additional diversity of thought, a development I view as extremely positive, fosters improved decision making throughout the company. “There is vitality in any of our global facilities and I believe it’s because our employees like being associated with others who are driven to succeed in designing, marketing, building and shipping quality products.” In the 1950s, Oil States expanded by developing the first flexible load bearings for bridges, which, it says, was the first use of a laminated bearing in a structural application. The company explains this laminated bearing technology was the foundation for the FlexJoint product line used today in drilling, production, mooring, and structural applications around the globe. During the 1970s, Oil States says it expanded into the aerospace market by developing elastomer-based shock and noise isolators for military, marine and aircraft usage. As exploration depths increased during the 1980s, Oil States responded with new products for tension leg platforms, floating production systems, subsea pipeline maintenance and repair, and subsea template installation and leveling. In the 1990s, Oil States says its deepwater solutions were implemented for major projects such as Norske Shell Troll, Shell Mars, Shell Mensa and Oryx Neptune. In the recent Petrobras project, Oil States installed the world’s first steel catenary riser on a floating production system. Just last year, Oil States acquired the variable reluctance measurement technology (VRMT) business from BBNT Solutions of Cambridge, Mass. With the addition of this operation, the company says, it can provide new load-monitoring equipment and software for offshore tendon and riser systems, as well as provide ongoing support and services for current systems already in operation. This acquisition also added seven patents to Oil States’ intellectual property assets, which, the company says, will allow it to continue its focus on innovative solutions for load measurement applications, the company says. The company notes VRMT systems and support are available through Oil States’ Offshore Construction Group, Special Products business units. “Through acquisitions made in the 1990s and early this century, Oil States has become an international company that provides a variety of products, services and integrated solutions worldwide,” the company says. “With locations in six countries and more than 1,300 employees worldwide, Oil States will carry on its tradition of developing and providing technologically advanced products and solutions well into the next century.” |
