Since its inception in 1955, Trumbull Corp. has managed more than $2 billion in construction services for both government and private clients, according to the West Mifflin, Pa.-based civil contractor. It also operates a regional office in St. Albans, W.V. “By completing some of the most challenging projects in our region on time and with a constant focus on owner cooperation and partnering, Trumbull has earned its unequalled reputation in the heavy highway construction industry,” the company asserts.

For heavy highway construction projects, Trumbull has the capability to self-perform its own demolition and site work – including excavation, paving and utilities – as well as bridges, foundations, fly ash landfills, waterlines, drainage construction and sanitary construction.

It also “has extensive experience with design/build services for road construction, bridge and tunnel construction, landfill and infrastructure management,” the company says. “[In addition], Trumbull’s construction management and inspection services team … is recognized by a multitude of owners as the one to select for a challenging project.”

Current projects include:
Parkway East, SR 376 — Trumbull and Lindy Paving Inc. were awarded a $22 million contract from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to make repairs and updates to Parkway East and State Route 376 in Allegheny County, Pa.

The project consists of concrete patching and overlay; resurfacing; bridge preservation; ramp improvements; and signing and marking improvements. The project began in March 2008 and will conclude in November 2008.

Maryland/Virginia Intercounty Connector — Trumbull and four other contractors have joint ventured on a $499 million design/build project for the second major segment of the Intercounty Connector issued by Maryland’s State Highway Administration.

The project, which began earlier this year, involves a six-lane highway that spans 18 miles and connects Interstate 270 in Montgomery County, Md., to Interstate 95 in Prince George’s County, Md. It is expected to be completed in phases in 2010, 2011 and 201

North Shore Connector — Working in a joint venture with Obayashi Corp, Trumbull was awarded a $156 million contract to build the twin tunnels under the Allegheny River that will connect the North Shore and Pittsburgh, Pa., through a 1.2 mile extension.

Details include boring twin tunnels under the river, lining them with concrete and excavating 1,200 feet to transition the tracks to ground level west of PNC Park. It is the first of 16 contracts that will be needed to complete the total project, which is expected to conclude in 2010.

‘Closely Held Family’
Trumbull and its siblings, Lindy Paving Inc. and P.J. Dick Inc., represent a “closely held family of companies that brings innovative solutions, dedicated professional personnel, a legacy of quality and safety, and more than 50 years of construction experience into every project,” the companies say.

Together, they have managed more than $5 billion in projects and are consistently ranked among the Top-100 general contractors and construction managers in the United States by Engineering News-Record.

As a group, the companies perform contracting services in a variety of markets, such as commercial, heavy/highway, government, healthcare, education, corrections, retail, infrastructure inspection, landfill management and asphalt production. “We have been able to become best of class by offering general construction, design/build, construction management and consulting services to our clients,” they say.

Committed to Safety
“At P.J. Dick, Trumbull and Lindy, we believe a project is not completed successfully unless it’s completed safely,” the companies say. “In an industry where the work force is distributed and constantly changing, safety can be a challenge.

“Drawing on our company-wide commitment, skilled professionals and award-winning safety innovations, we deliver intelligent safety solutions that have a positive impact on [projects.]”

The companies’ goal is to “blend safety and operations into one function,” they explain. “Our approach is to elevate safety awareness and know-how throughout our organization. We believe that by making safety intuitive to all employees, we can solve safety problems without creating barriers to cost-effective project completion.”

‘Embracing Sustainability’
The three companies are strong supporters of the green building movement because “as contractors, we are compelled to find innovative strategies, materials and resources that promote energy conservation and recycling,” they say, adding that they’ve been leaders in sustainable construction practices since the 1980s.

“Educational programs are offered that provide the knowledge and skills to assist with local efforts to reduce environmental impacts and maximize community benefits,” the companies say.

“We embrace and will continue to support efforts towards sustainability as we see it for the long-term good of our company, our customers and the region,” the companies add.
