Acting as the owner’s representative on last year’s Eastern Connecticut State University’s (ECSU) new student center project, A/Z Corp. was charged with maintaining budget limitations and ensuring schedule milestones were achieved.

The company explains it strives to achieve these goals on all of its projects, but it was particularly challenging at ECSU because of the job’s scope. The plan was to double the center’s size, as well as add a 5,000-square-foot fitness center, campus bookstore, theater, coffeehouse, snack bar, several open lounge areas, conference and meeting rooms and offices for student organizations.

“Throughout all phases of the construction process, A/Z relies on the most sophisticated systems and programs to keep projects on-track and on-budget,” the company says. “We offer innovative ideas, which reduce costs, maintain quality and meet or exceed the project goals. We apply this approach to every aspect of construction, operations and maintenance we serve.         “Our experience counts when choosing a partner.”

The Connecticut-based construction management and specialty construction firm says it is dedicated to providing “superior solutions” in construction services.

A/Z began as an electrical contractor, but with more than 40 years in the construction industry, it has evolved to serve the construction needs of high-tech companies in the life sciences, institutional, manufacturing, hospitality and gaming, education and utility/mission-critical markets. The company says its expertise and reputation are a result of this specialized experience.

A/Z stresses it is proud of having grown to become one of the largest construction firms in New England, and says its “knowledge, foresight, perseverance and dedication to its philosophy, employees, clients, colleagues, suppliers and community” have ensured its continued growth over the years. These qualities, A/Z says, also have resulted in its 95 percent negotiated repeat business with clients.

“We focus on engagements with a clear understanding that personal attention and responsiveness are key attributes in rendering successful results,” the company says.         “Whether we are supporting program management, engineering, construction, commissioning or facility programs, our team is prepared to provide unparalleled customer service with value, quality, safety and responsiveness.

“The willingness of the professionals within our organization to form mutually beneficial relationships with each client has been paramount to building an enduring reputation.”

‘Unique Requirements’
One of A/Z Corp.’s repeat clients is Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals of Ridgefield, Conn.; it recently finished the construction of a $36.5 million physical science laboratory for the healthcare company’s 238-acre complex. A/Z explains this project involved the erection of a three-story, 99,000-square-foot building, which was to house 115 scientists in new chemistry and biology laboratories. The company also has performed building expansion and site utility relocation for this client, many times working onsite when the pharmaceuticals company remained in operation.

A/Z says “the ultimate test of our abilities is demonstrated every day as we complete projects in operational environments.” Its corporate policy, the company says, ensures the training, safety and health of its employees and subcontractors are the first consideration in operating its organization. To accomplish this, A/Z says it invests heavily in prevention through safe and healthy working conditions and training. Additionally, the firm regularly works with certified industry programs to ensure its clients meet regulatory standards and validation requirements.

The company says its “first-in-class” success in a diverse range of challenging projects is also the result of its strong management team.

“A/Z Corp.’s management approach is styled around results, responsiveness and accountability to the clients we serve,” the company says. “We structure many different types of working alliances and partnerships with local and national client accounts. These partnerships are a direct result of our performance, flexibility and willingness to create construction programs that provide unique operational excellence for each individual client.

“We have standard operating procedures that act as a building block when forming customized procedures.

“We realize each client possesses unique requirements and ensure that their independent culture and operational philosophy is not compromised during the design, construction and close-out of a program.”

Community Involvement
A/Z explains it works hard to improve and strengthen its local community, through its projects, as well as by working with local organizations. These include:

  • Brain Injury Association of Connecticut
  • Boy Scouts of America
  • Connecticut Special Olympics
  • Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island
  • International Children’s Conference on the Environment
  • New York Academy of Medicine
  • New York Botanical Gardens
  • The Jimmy Fund
  • United Community & Family Services
  • University of Connecticut Athletic Fund

“Our management team is built around years of proven industry experience,” the company says. “They understand the importance of continuous training and a holistic approach to construction services in order to remain flexible and deliver the appropriate amount of risk control to our clients.

“Working in harmony within our business community has been a policy for A/Z, and our management team strives to ensure ethical business practices are deployed each and every day among all project participants.”
