One of EllisDon’s latest healthcare projects will make healthcare more easily accessible for more than 300,00 people in Ontario. EllisDon is building the new Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) in Peterborough, Ontario. The hospital currently operates on two sites and serves a four-county area.

This project will consolidate the center into one regional hospital once completed this year. The structure will occupy 750,000 square feet and seven floors on a nearby hillside. EllisDon says the current facility will be demolished this year, once the new structure is complete.

The new hospital will accommodate up to 494 beds and house numerous medical services. PRHC expects to open the new hospital in June 2008, and EllisDon says the project’s value is $197 million (Canadian).

The hospital is more than 90 percent complete, and the first pieces of patient care equipment are scheduled to arrive in the next few months.

Specifically, PRHC says, the brick work is complete, 50 percent of the painting is complete, 96 percent of the mechanical work is done and 82 percent of the electrical work is complete, as well.

According to the Daily Commercial and Construction Record, the new PRHC was designed by Stantec Ltd. The subcontractors include Ron Robinson Construction Ltd. for site work; Azimuth Three Enterprises Inc. for structural steel; Harris Rebar; Limen Group for masonry; Sutherland-Schultz Ltd. for mechanical; Ontario Electrical Construction Co.; General Sprinklers for fire protection; Marel Contractors for drywall; Northwood Carpet & Tile; Continental Cabinet Co. Inc.; Semple-Gooder Roofing Ltd for roofing and siding; Bothwell-Accurate Co. Ltd. for waterproofing; AGS Contract Glazing for glass, glazing and siding; and Delta Elevator Ltd.

Successful Fundraisers
PRHC has used some unique fundraising initiatives to acquire new equipment for the hospital. The Peterborough Examiner reported that the hospital’s By Your Side fundraising campaign raised $25,000 through a four-day sale at Bannerman’s, a woman’s clothing store in downtown Peterborough.

According to The Peterborough Examiner, the store held the sale from Jan. 22 to 25, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the hospital’s drive to raise $10 million for new medical equipment for the new hospital.

The hospital has also raised funds through Survivors Abreast, which is a breast cancer support group that represents PRHC in the annual Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival.

The Examiner reported that the group has raised more than $1 million over the past seven years. This will help purchase digital mammogram machines for the new hospital’s breast assessment center, which will include “Survivors Abreast” in its name.

Other Healthcare Projects
EllisDon was awarded a $173 million redevelopment project for Montfort Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario. The project will more than double the size of the current facility.

The work includes the addition of 420,000 square feet, which will bring the total size of the hospital to 660,000 square feet. EllisDon says the new hospital will accommodate 289 acute beds and add two new wings on the west side of the existing hospital, a new main and emergency entrance at the front and a new six-story tower on the east side, which will provide the new location for the Canadian Forces Health Services Group.

The company started work on the project in 2006. It says completion of the new addition was finished in July 2007 and the renovation work will be complete in October 2009.

EllisDon also completed the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, in August 2006. The $260 million hospital, located on the University of Calgary’s West Campus, “will enhance the synergies between bedside care, the U of C’s research education facilities and the Foothill’s Medical Centre’s expertise and technology,” the company says.

“Every aspect of the new Alberta Children’s Hospital is designed for the needs of their patients and their families in mind,” the company adds.

“From outdoor healing gardens and play spaces to a larger emergency department and in-room patient sleeping accommodation, the new hospital will provide a warm and child friendly environment and will accommodate the growing population it serves.”

The new emergency department will have more than 30 exam stations for 60,000 visits per year. The department will also have two triage desks to decrease wait times for incoming patients, EllisDon says.

The hospital, owned by Calgary Health Region, also has the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, which houses 20 beds. This area has single, private isolation rooms, as well as sleeping areas for parents.
