Turner utilized several active and passive green techniques in the construction of the interior. “The use of green building products – those products which are resource-efficient, recycled, less toxic, exhibit exceptional performance and are cost-effective – was an important aspect of the greening effort,” the company says. “The project also included extensive energy-efficient strategies such as optimization of natural day lighting and use of efficient mechanical and electrical lighting technologies.”

Nationwide, Turner has developed and built many LEED-certified projects, many of which were pioneering efforts in sustainable construction. In Atlanta, Turner built the 650-foot-tall 1180 Peachtree building, which is only the second building certified LEED Gold for both its core and shell in the city.

“Behind the unusually shaped façade of glass and metal is office space that is flooded with light through 10-foot, floor-to-ceiling glass,” the company says. “The building also uses a water-management system that decreases storm water by covering half the roof with absorbing vegetation.

“The remaining storm water, in conjunction with the condensation collected from the building’s mechanical systems, is channeled to an underground storage vault and used for irrigation, bypassing the need for city water.”

‘Platinum’ Project
In Sacramento, Calif., Turner built the LEED Platinum headquarters for the California Environmental Protection Agency. The 25-story, 950,000-square-foot office building features solar panels, recycled carpet tiles and recycled ceiling panels.

“Turner recycled building materials used on site during construction such as wood, cardboard, concrete, rebar and steel and paper products,” the company says.

The Main Hub
Turner’s Arlington office is the central hub of the company’s work in the Mid-Atlantic region, including Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and the Carolinas.

Turner’s presence in the Washington, D.C., area dates back to 1975, but the company has been building projects in the region since 1916, according to the company. In 2005, Turner was named Contractor of the Year by Mid-Atlantic Construction magazine. The scope of Turner’s work in the Mid-Atlantic region runs the gamut. The company says it has experience building just about any kind of project that might arise in the Washington, D.C., market.

“Local work history includes both renovations and construction for aviation, bio-pharmaceutical, commercial/office, public assembly, amusement/recreation, data centers, education, hospital/healthcare, hotels/residential, industrial/manufacturing, interiors/renovation, Internet hosting facilities, justice, research/development, retail and sports,” the company says.

“Also located in our office is Turner’s Mid-Atlantic Special Project Division [SPD], which specializes in interior renovation and tenant build-out, and constructs smaller freestanding structures,” the company adds.

“Over the past 10 years, Turner SPD’s Arlington office has completed a variety of projects, including renovations to the Prince William Hospital in Manassas, Va.; the Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.; as well as high-tech data centers and switch facilities, laboratories, industrial, educational and foodservice facilities.”

No matter what the project, though, Turner says the reason it succeeds is always the same. “Turner’s strength is its ability to deliver both the personalized services expected by our clients, as well as the knowledge and understanding of how to complete a high-quality project on time and within budget,” the company says. “Turner’s key resource that enables the company to provide this depth of service is its talented staff of over 5,300 employees.”

‘Recognized Leader’
The company was founded in 1902 by Henry C. Turner, who became successful by treating his clients as “respected friends,” the company says. That same philosophy serves the company well to this day, it says, as it strives to maintain its position as one of the leading contractors in the nation.

“The company quickly built a reputation for integrity, teamwork and commitment. These values remain true today and are the reason we were able to celebrate our 100th anniversary.

“Turner is recognized as a leader in the industry,” the company adds. “Our position and our strength enables the company to provide additional value to our clients and opportunities for our employees. Together, we are building the future.”
