The Caribbean is a paradise on Earth for many people, and that includes builders. Take, for example, international contractor Fluor Daniel, which has had an office in Puerto Rico for more than 40 years. Executive Director Julio Miranda says the company has built strong relationships with the subcontractor community in the Caribbean in that time, and become renowned for its full-service general contracting work in the pharmaceuticals sector as well as in energy. “The range of facilities we have constructed in Puerto Rico have been over $7 billion in construction,” he says. Miranda says the company’s local management and its unique abilities make it stand out among other contractors in the area. A major component of its capabilities is its ability to self-perform structural steel work, one of the biggest elements of construction. Fluor Daniel Caribbean specializes in engineering, architecture and construction management, and its clients include some of the biggest names in pharmaceuticals. These include Abbott Labs, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson. One recent project in this sector was a large-scale biotech manufacturing facility in Puerto Rico. “Right now, in the area of pharmaceutical and biotech, we probably dominate almost 75 percent of the engineering and construction [work here],” Miranda says. Fluor Daniel Caribbean has been known to flex its muscle in other sectors, as well. For example, the company recently provided its services for an $800 million power facility in Puerto Rico. Around the world, Fluor has a reputation for doing the right thing, and was named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies in 2007 by Ethisphere magazine. The company’s ethics manifest themselves through charitable work, community involvement and a devotion to HSE. That modular facility was built for Eli Lilly as part of a large-scale biotech manufacturing facility that produces insulin for human use. Fluor Daniel says it is the largest modularly constructed biologics manufacturing plant in the world. Fluor Daniel Caribbean worked with Fluor’s Greenville, S.C., office to complete this project, the company says. Fluor provided engineering, procurement, construction management and validation for the project, which consists of more than 600 modules from five manufacturers in four countries. The company says, not surprisingly, that such a project requiring so many modules from so many manufacturers is “logistically complex” and requires that management from both offices be on their toes to coordinate traffic and construction. |
