With its motto, “Earning our stripes everyday” in tow, Anderson Columbia Co. Inc. (ACCI) is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a milestone project – the I-75 Interstate Roadway Expansion project in Florida’s Lee Collier County, the state’s largest highway project to date. For the past five decades, the Old Town, Fla.-based company has earned its stripes with each individual project until it became one of the Southeast’s largest construction firms. “This success is a direct result of [our] corporate philosophy of combining highly qualified personnel with state-of-the-art technology committed to providing professional services on-schedule and within budget,” it explains. “Experience, foresight and expertise in a strong management team, backed by quality personnel and equipment, has resulted in thousands of clients trusting ACCI to build their most complex projects.”

For instance, the company and its joint-venture partner, AJAX Paving Industries, “made history this year going up against some of the most-recognized projects in the transportation construction industry and winning the right through a highly competitive bid process” to build a 30-mile section of I-75 between Naples and Ft. Meyers, Fla., it says.

I-75 is one of the Florida’s most heavily traveled interstates. ACCI will add two new lanes, reconstruct bridges, add retention ponds and erect noise barrier walls. One million tons of lime rock and 400,000 tons of asphalt are expected to be used on the $400-$500 million project, which will be completed in 2010. “My compliments go out to our team that put together this package,” ACCI President Joe Anderson III said in a statement. “Much hard work and dedication went into this project from both ACCI and AJAX personnel, and now we’re ready to implement our plan.”

Reaping Recognition
The company distinguishes itself from its competitors by providing “unmatched attention to details,” it notes. “Ensuring that only quality materials are used during paving operations, Anderson Columbia easily meets strict customer quality specifications.

Quality control is essentially enhanced by the operation of our own asphalt plants, of which many are mobile, allowing us to strategically locate a plant close to the construction site. These technically advanced plants included computer-controlled mixing of hot-mix asphalt.”

This approach has resulted in numerous awards for quality, the company adds. For instance, Anderson Columbia received the Sheldon G. Hayes Award for best paving job after it paved six lanes of I-75 in Lowndes County, Ga.

“This coveted recognition is awarded to only one contractor each year in the entire United States,” it adds.

Diversity is Key
“Diversification is a key element to the success of Anderson Columbia,” the company states. “Through subsidiaries and affiliates, ACCI has achieved vertical product integration that ultimately results in cost savings for our customers.”
