Cleburne, Texas-based Quanta Services helps to design, install, repair and maintain the network infrastructure for the electric power, telecommunications, broadband cable and natural gas industries.

“The company’s services encompass a broad range, from specialized construction techniques it takes to string cable across the country to the repair and maintenance of the switching equipment that manages and routes wireless communications,” it says.

The company has installed wires, poles, substations and other facilities to provide power for homes and businesses; cables towers and equipment to provide wireless and wireline communication of voice and data for the telecommunication industry; cable and headed facilities to provide bandwidth for Internet and cable television; and pipelines to transport natural gas.

It has served customers such as AOL Time Warner, AT&T, Carolina Power & Light, Puget Sound Energy, Sprint PCS, UtiliCorp United and Verizon. It employs more than 13,000 people, has 19,000 pieces of equipment, and maintains offices in 40 states and operations throughout North America.

Quanta has also installed and maintained infrastructure in remote areas and under a variety of weather conditions, it notes.

“Quanta Services has completed a number of projects almost entirely from the air, employing helicopters to remove and replace equipment,” it says. “From Alaskan tundra to Florida swamps, Quanta crews have completed challenging installations without heavy equipment on the ground, and in some cases, without leaving a footprint.”

Path to Success

Quanta Services was founded in 1997 to meet the needs of the electric utility and telecommunications industries. “With deregulation driving fundamental changes in the electric power industry, the founders anticipated a dramatic expansion in outsourcing of the design, installation, repair and maintenance of transmission and distribution networks,” the company explains.

“Today, this vision has been validated: Quanta Services is the largest electric contractor in the United States,” the company notes.

The Company’s Vision

Quanta Services’ vision was to create a contracting team with the resources of the nation’s leading contractors with the capability of addressing comprehensive and complex infrastructure needs.

“As a team of companies operating with the efficiencies of one power entity, Quanta has the knowledge and expertise to handle a full spectrum of projects,” the company says.

“From the most-straightforward, single-component installation to the most complex, multi-state network project, Quanta can handle the job efficiently and cost-effectively.”

The company’s expertise enabled it to achieve significant growth in its first few years. It grew from $152 million in revenues in its freshman year to $2 billion in 2000.

“In addition to the telecom and power industries, Quanta’s comprehensive services are increasingly demanded by the natural gas market, where, in addition to the general competitive pressures being faced, environmental concerns are forcing close scrutiny of the integrity of the networks,” it says.

‘Network of Experts’

Quanta Services has a “nationwide network of experts” who specialize in the design, construction and maintenance of all types of transmission network infrastructure, it says, including:

  • Outsourcing
  • Electric power
  • Telecommunications
  • Broadband cable
  • Gas pipelines
  • Speciality services, such as airport fueling, emergency restoration, large directional drilling, light rail, pipeline transfer, rock trenching, vegetation control and wind generation

“Recognizing the power and communications commodities that have been converging for several years, the company has acquired a number of the most respected and capable contractors in the country and integrated their capabilities to provide a single source for complete network infrastructure services for the electric power, telecommunications, broadband cable and gas pipeline industries,” it says.

“In addition, the range of our expertise enables us to offer a variety of specialty services that address the unique needs of a variety of commercial, industrial and governmental customers,” the company adds.

Ethical Conduct

Quanta Services implements a stringent ethical and business conduct code that all of its operating units are required to follow when in contact with suppliers, customers, competitors, government officials, employees and the general public, it says.

“Our reputation for the highest standard of business integrity was built by and depends on the personal integrity of our employees and our dedication to the fundamental principles of fairness, honesty, loyalty, respect, candor and prudence,” CEO and President John Colson said in a statement.

“It is essential that we maintain our hard-earned reputation. Each employee is expected to represent our company with honor, integrity and best efforts, and to maintain Quanta’s valued reputation for the highest standard of business integrity.”

Strong Track Record
Quanta is led by Colson, who has served as president and CEO since 1997. Before Quanta, he worked at PAR Electrical Contractors for 27 years.

“With experience in every aspect of electrical contracting, John provides the vision that guides the company’s growth as a complete source for all network infrastructure contracting services for the electric power, gas, telecommunications and broadband cable industries,” the company says.

He is a member of several organizations, including the Council of Industrial Relations.

James Haddox joined the company in 1997 and serves as CFO.

Previously, he was senior vice president of finance for Corporate Express Delivery Systems.

Strong Track Record
Quanta plans to continue expanding its knowledge base, capabilities and geographic reach by establishing a strong track record, maintaining experienced leadership and growing its geographic reach, it says.

“The company continues to execute this proven strategy to ensure that its customers have direct access to a complete selection of design, installation and maintenance services for virtually any infrastructure,” it says.

North Houston Pole Line
Quanta division North Houston Pole Line (NHPLC) LP provides a range of power and telecommunication utility services.

“North Houston Pole Line has grown into one of the largest construction contractors in the Southwest, providing a wide array of services and working in many rural, urban and geographical areas,” NHPLC says.

“Whatever the task, whether it be emergency call-out catastrophic response or day-to-day operations, North Houston Pole Line is the contractor of choice,” it continues.

“As a result of this focus, we produce an accident free, highly efficient work environment for our employees and clients alike,” it continues.
