In June, Clark Construction began construction on North Bethesda Market, a $150 million, three-building retail and residential complex in Maryland. The 1.2-million-square-foot project will be completed by 2010.

The centerpiece of the project is the 24-story apartment tower, which will be the tallest building in Montgomery County, Md. It will have 200 units  – with the top floors providing views of Washington, D.C., and Rockville, Md. – and a 50,000-square-foot fitness center.

The complex also includes a six-story residential tower with 210 apartment units, a 60,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market, a third-floor courtyard, outdoor dining area, fitness center, pool and e-lounge, and a 36,000-square-foot two-story building solely for retail.

An additional 57,000 square feet of retail space will be located throughout the complex.  Site clearing, demolition and foundation systems are 100 percent complete, and excavation is nearing completion. Concrete work is well underway.

The complex is located near Rockville Pike and the White Flint Metro Station. It will include a common plaza and paseo, which will provide access to the buildings from the north and south entrances of the facility. There will also be five levels of underground parking beneath the buildings.

‘Century of Building Experience’
North Bethesda is one of Clark Construction’s many projects. It provides preconstruction, construction management, general contracting, trade work, design/build and consulting services. The company performs major projects nationwide and earns more than $4 billion in annual revenues.

“From small interior renovations to some of the most visible architectural landmarks in the country, the foundation of all of our construction work is solid relationships with public and private clients who have the confidence to rely, time and again, on our experience, financial strength and in-house expertise to make their vision a reality,” the company says.

Clark was founded in 1906 as the George Hyman Construction Co. It is headquartered in Bethesda, Md., and has offices in Boston; Chicago; Costa Mesa, Calif.; Denver; Las Vegas; Oakland, Calif.; San Diego; Seattle; and Tampa, Fla. The company performs projects in a variety of sectors, including education, healthcare, hospitality, mass transportation, mixed-use, office, residential, science and sports.

“Our diverse construction portfolio and specialized divisions and subsidiaries ensure that each project is matched with appropriate resources and expertise,” it says. “We anticipate project challenges, develop solutions that meet clients’ objectives and ultimately deliver award-winning projects.

“We view each project we undertake as an opportunity to exceed our client’s expectations, and with each new opportunity presented, our clients benefit from Clark’s century of building experience.”

In-House Expertise
Clark acknowledges that the most valuable resource it can give its clients is a qualified construction team, which includes employees who specialize in partnering, estimating, purchasing, scheduling, cost engineering, risk management, safety and community relations.

“This in-house expertise provides clients with the peace of mind that all technical and administrative issues are properly managed on each project,” it says.

“We bring to projects an unparalleled depth of expertise in various project types, construction methods or project teaming arrangements,” the company says. “Clark’s flexibility allows us to combine these specialized abilities in the best way to meet the needs of individual projects to provide a superior level of service and peace of mind to clients.”

It also looks for subcontractors who provide excellent work. “Clark seeks the most competitive and qualified local, national and international subcontractors and suppliers with the operational and financial capacity to successfully perform each project, and works with them to build projects that are successful for all parties involved,’ the company says.

Clark strives to work well with clients, architects and subcontractors to achieve a successful project delivery. “In this way, our work today continues to meet the stringent standards of quality and integrity set by our founder,” it says.
